Surya Sivakumar’s Bodhidharma Character in Seventh Sense - 7aum Arivu music launch!

Tamil star Surya Sivakumar, who is known to show greater variety in his films, is coming up with a science fiction thriller ‘7th Sense’ this time. For this, he had teamed up with highly acclaimed director AR Murugadoss, who earlier made the blockbuster ‘Ghajini’ with him.

In ‘Seventh Sense’, Surya has reportedly played three characters - a circus artist, a scientist and a Buddhist monk.

The character of the Buddhist is much linked to the history and tradition. The Buddhist monk is said to be a Tamil (Pallava) prince-turned-monk Bodhidharma who is credited with the establishment of 'Zen' in the world. In the 14th century, the Tamil prince from Kancheepuram travelled to China and became a well-respected monk there.

Director A R Murugadoss said that they had done lot of research on ‘Bodhidharma’ prior to the start of the film. He said that the role was intense and required lot of practice, and added that Suriyas has done a great job in the role.

Cartosat-2B sent high quality images of the Indian landmass (Madurai,Allahabad)

Remote-sensing satellite Cartosat-2B has sent high quality images of the Indian landmass, including Allahabad in Uttar Pradesh and Madurai in Tamil Nadu.

The images were taken by the satellite's panchromatic camera, which has a high resolution of 0.8 metre. That is, it can image even small objects such as cycles and mopeds on the road, and sheep and cattle grazing on meadows.

The Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C15) of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) put Cartosat-2B and four other satellites in orbit on July 12. It was launched from Sriharikota.

P.S. Veeraraghavan, Director, Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, said Cartosat-2B was in good health and that “it has taken a good number of pictures.”

He said the images of Madurai included the famous Meenakshi temple with its gopurams (towers), the railway junction and a running train, the airport with parked aircraft, and another temple situated in the centre of a tank.

The images of Allahabad showed a fort in the town and the Triveni Sangam.

AirCondition threatens frescoes in Madurai Meenakshi Temple

One of Tamil Nadu’s best known ancient temples is seeing a revamp that may not go down well with conservationists. The sanctum sanctorum of Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple in Madurai is being air-conditioned at a cost of Rs 30 lakh to provide a cooler environment to priests and devotees. In the process, however, frescoes and carvings on the walls and ceiling of the 1,500-year-old structure are being blocked.

The edifice has many natural vents which act as a natural cooling system. But with trees disappearing from the surroundings of the temple and concrete structures taking their place, the temple environs have become stuffy and according to the priests, it is difficult to stay inside for more than an hour. ‘‘The air inside becomes hot and we develop headaches,’’ said a priest.

A donor has now come forward to air-condition the sanctums of goddess Sri Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar. Huge steel pipes will bring in cooled air from two 18-tonne air conditioners and vents would circulate the air in the area where devotees gather for darshan.

Sundaram (82) of North Veli street in Madurai, who has been frequenting the temple right from his childhood, said, ‘‘Earlier entering the temple after walking in the hot sun was very relieving since the interior was cool. But over the past 10 to 15 years, I have noticed that it becomes extremely hot inside the sanctum sanctorum, primarily because of the large crowds that visit the temple. The proposal for the air-conditioning is a welcome move.’’

Temple sources said high-rise buildings and traffic pollution had contributed to the heat inside the temple. Speaking to TOI, joint commissioner of Sri Meenakshi temple K Rajanayagam said the AC work would be completed in a few weeks.

Ragini wants to stay in Kollywood

The Miss Beautiful Hair crown at the Miss India Contest 2009 has not only fuelled the aspirations of Ragini Dwivedi, but has also opened up several vistas for her.

Ragini, who debuted with Veera Madakkeri in Kannada, has done three films in a span of just six months in Sandalwood and is all set to do the remake of the Telugu film Shourayam.

Talking about her first Tamil film, she says, “I’m really excited and looking forward to the release of Ariyaan. It’s the storyline and the fabulous music that attracted me to the film. I’m thankful to producer Prabhdeesh Samuel and the entire team. He was very particular about me doing the role.”

Ragini plays the role of a spoilt daughter of a wealthy man in the film. Says she, “The role is very different. The role I play in the film is that of a person who lives life as she pleases. She is bubbly, fun loving and arrogant. An accidental meeting with a shy, simple boy changes her life and it’s the twist in the climax that will be the highlight.”

The beautiful actress seems to be bitten hard by the Kollywood bug and says that she is all ready to rock the industry. “I’m looking to grab roles in Tamil. Kollywood is a place of world famous technicians. The quality of the films and the way they are made are all unique and fabulous. Who wouldn’t want to be part of such an industry,” she asks.

She adds that if she gets more offers in Tamil, she doesn’t mind shifting her home to Chennai.

Talking about her immediate plans, she says, “I would like to work with all the leading stars of Kollywood and I’m learning Tamil now. I haven’t taken up acting by chance. I want to stay here,” she clarifies. Like many others, Ragini too found fame through modelling. The daughter of an army officer, this Punjabi girl says that her family too is quite excited about her career. “Usually, I listen to scripts along with one of my family members and we jointly decide as to whether I should do the film or not,” she says.

Even as she pursues her film career, the actress is also doing her third semester in B A. However, she says that her hectic schedules have got in the way of her studies. But she has no regrets. “I’m enjoying doing films and I don’t feel I’m missing out on fun except for the fact that I have considerably reduced the number of ramp shows ,” she says.

Apparently, this pretty model has learnt how to manage her career, relationships and gossip. On her apparent link up with Sudeep, her co-star in a Kannada film, she says, “When you are into films, it’s natural that your personal or professional friendships come under the scanner. I’m mature enough to handle it.” Ask her if she seeing someone and she says, “I have just started my career and I think things on the personal front can wait for sometime. Besides, I want to do good films, gain experience and want to make a mark in Bollywood as well.” Way to go, babe!

Political City Madurai gears up for Durai Dayanidhi's B'Day

Though Madurai Corporation has banned posters within the city limits, the ruling party men undeterred by this ban have started painting the town red to celebrate the birthday of Durai Dayanidhi, son of Union Minister M K Alagiri.

DMK cadre especially in Madurai are known for going overboard in organising party functions and this time they are all set to have a gala birthday bash for ‘Madurai Ilavarasare’ on September 27.

The muse inherent in the cadre has again unleashed its artistic potential with banners and flex boards again marring the city landscape.

The activists now seem to be more vigilant in choosing crowning titles for his son.

Most banners address him as Madurayin Ilavarasane, Thenmandala Ilavarasane, Annanin Magane, Annanin Punniyame, Vallale, Pugazhe.

All the leading advertisement agencies here were busy in designing attractive and innovative banners.

One of the innovate posters is that of a redesigned Rs 1,000 note with picture of Alagiri on the left and of Durai Dayanidhi on the right.

The project, to be directed by Simbu himself, was shelved as Vaalakshmi backed out of it.

Khushbu, actress, producer and distributor says, “These so called B-school guys have ruined Tamil cinema, by entering the market without doing a proper study. As a result, they have pushed up the cost of production. What do these guys, sitting in the cool comfort of their offices in Mumbai and Chennai, know about collections, audiences profile or the topography of a Theni or a Dindigul film market?”

The B-school boys and their management skills have come in for sharp criticism in the industry after the failure of a superstar film which they bought for a ridiculous amount. The company, which purchased the film, also took over 200 theatres in Tamil Nadu on lease, but is struggling to keep afloat today. Says Balasubramaniam, a theatre owner in Coimbatore who had leased out his twin theatres to the company, “I was running my theatre well before these guys took it on lease. They claimed that they would professionalise the business, but ended up with egg on their face.”

Kandaswamy Bharathan, an MBA from IIM, Ahmedabad and a leading producer says, “The word corporatisation, when it comes to the film industry, should be defined in a broader context. Films have to be considered as products — there is production, pricing, distribution and they satisfy the needs of customers through entertainment.” Kandaswamy also added that today, a lot of young B-school boys are venturing into production, distribution and other sectors of film business, which require a professional approach.
However P L Thenappan, a leading producer begs to differ. Says he, “I’m a school drop out, but I have made more than a dozen hit films with big stars like Kamal Haasan. I know how the trade functions better than any B-school graduate. These guys have created chaos in the industry by making films without any budget constraints, paid salaries to stars which were not viable and most importantly, they do not understand the pulls and pressures of filmmaking.”

The argument is never ending as financial analysts and entertainment industry trackers who have graduated out of B-schools feel that there is gold in Tamil film production and trade if the “best minds in the business run Kollywood.” Recently, a leading corporate completed their new film Kandein Kadhalai in a record five months. This is quite a feat considering veteran producers are still struggling to finish their big budget films two years after the film was launched!

Says producer G Dhananjayan, who has made quality films like Poo, Raman Thediya Seethai and now Kandein Kadhalai, “We have brought in a professional approach to filmmaking by completing our films on time. We are currently testing waters and if we are confident, then we will definitely invest more.” Concludes Swaroop Reddy, owner of a leading multiplex in the city, and one of the key players to bring about a change in the Tamil film business, “Much can be said by both sides. At the end of the day, it does not matter if you are a traditionalist or a modernist. It is the passion for cinema that is the driving force in show business.”
